REAL EAR VERIFICATION: SCIENCE-BASED HEARING AID TESTS & FITTINGS

Real ear measurements are an evidence-based approach that objectively evaluates the function of hearing instruments while the patient is wearing them. Placing a probe microphone near the eardrum allows us to measure the real-ear effectiveness of specific hearing instrument features, programmed settings, and to establish correction factors. The primary purpose though is to assess the gain and output for the settings the patient will use for listening to speech. Verification measures answer the fitting question, “Are the hearing instruments delivering the appropriate output for soft, average, and loud speech signals, and are high inputs delivered at a comfortable and safe level?” Probe microphone measures verify whether the hearing instruments are performing in the manner that they should be performing. Depending on the level of hearing loss, 100% improvement is not always possible, but the goal is to maximize the benefit to get as close to 100% as possible.
